What is Vitamin C?

Otherwise known as L-ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is a water-soluble essential nutrient found in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and bell peppers.

While most of us are probably getting plenty of vitamin C from eating fresh fruit and veg,  very little of it ever reaches our skin.

Therefore, to reap the benefits of vitamin C for skin, this essential nutrient is frequently added to skin care products such as face wash and moisturizing creams for topical application.

The Benefits of Vitamin C in Skin Care

Here’s why you should add vitamin C to your face and skin care routine, right now!

1. It’s suitable (and safe) for all skin types

Vitamin C is suitable for all skin types

Our skin can be selective and what is appropriate for one skin type might not be appropriate for another.

For example, those with acne-prone or sensitive skin have to be very careful with certain skin care ingredients.

Fortunately, vitamin C is suitable for all skin types!

According to the dermatologist,  Dr. Pumori Saokar:

"Vit. C [has] a very high safety profile” and “can be used in conjunction with other common topical anti-ageing agents such as sunscreens, tretinoin, [and] other antioxidants"

2. Vitamin C protects your face against UV exposure

Overexposure to the sun can trigger the formation of  free radicals in the body, which causes significant damage to skin cells.

Our bodies use antioxidants to ‘mop up’ these free radicals, preventing them from causing harm.

Vitamin C is a rich source of antioxidants and is commonly paired with vitamin E in skin care products to topically  protect against sun damage.

These two nutrients WORK TOGETHER to benefit your skin in many ways, which is why it’s a good idea to use a product containing both vitamins C & E.

3. It soothes and repairs sunburnt skin

In addition to protecting against sunburn, a vitamin C face wash benefits damaged skin with its soothing properties.

It does this by stimulating the  growth of collagen (the most abundant protein in the body), which promotes skin healing.

In other words, vitamin C replaces the sun-damaged cells with healthy new ones.

4. Topical vitamin C reduces redness

Our skin does wonders to shield us from pathogens, allergens, thorns, and other external nasties.

Nevertheless, we sometimes experience the unpleasant side effects of this protection, including inflammation (that painful reddening and sometimes swelling of the skin).

Those of us with sensitive skin will likely experience this more often than others.

Luckily, as mentioned earlier, vitamin C face wash is suitable for ALL skin types and  inhibits inflammatory-causing proteins to  minimize redness.

Its ability to reduce inflammation makes vitamin C a beneficial skin care ingredient for conditions like acne vulgaris and rosacea.

5. Use vitamin C on your face for anti-aging effects

Over our lifespan, the body’s collagen levels start to deplete and eventually this leads to the formation of wrinkles.

But, thanks to its ability to stimulate collagen growth, using vitamin C face wash can have a powerful anti-aging effect.

In fact,  according to a clinical study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, daily application of topical vitamin C over a prolonged period leads to a significant increase in the density of dermal papillae (skin cells made from collagen that decrease with age).

6. Vitamin C hydrates your skin

Even those of us with oily skin type have experienced the discomfort of dry skin at some point.

Humans actually  lose approximately 28% of their fluids through evaporation, both from the skin and breathing air out of our lungs.

Scientists have demonstrated that vitamin C can  decrease transepidermal water loss.

In other words, by using a vitamin C face wash, we can maintain hydrated and healthy skin!

Hydration is one of the many benefits of vitamin C in skin care

7. Use vitamin C under your eyes to banish dark circles

Through its hydrating and collagen-boosting properties, a vitamin C face wash can reduce the discoloration and puffiness under your eyes.

BE GONE, DARK CIRCLES!
